Scrutiny and Health : A New Role for Councillors - Seminar 20 September, 2001

1. Summary
1.1. Following the enactment of the Health and social Care Act the Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) has arranged a seminar to consider the implications of the health scrutiny role which has great potential to develop integrated health strategies as part of the new power of community well-being.
1.2. The seminar will take place in London on Thursday 20 September 2001.
1.3. The seminar will provide an opportunity to discuss:
· Practical models and policy issues
· How to develop health expertise
· How to involve health service users
· How to support local independent patient advocacy services
· How the power will work in two-tier areas and in relation to geographical boundaries
1.4. The cost of the seminar is £58.75 including VAT per delegate.
2. As places on the seminar are limited the Chief Executive, in consultation with the Chairman, has booked a place on the Seminar for Councillor Felicity Hindson.
RECOMMENDATION:
That:-
(a) The Chief Executive's actions in booking a place for Councillor Felicity Hindson to attend the LGIU seminar Scrutiny and Health : A New role for Councillors on 20 September 2001 be approved.
(b) Consideration be given to the appointment of other members to attend the seminar if places are available.
