The route for the future

About the ZIP route

Designed to meet tomorrow's transport needs

Landsdowne Avenue Shops, WidleyThe ZIP corridor is being designed and built in sections, and is due for completion in early 2008. As detailed plans are developed for each part of the scheme, the public, local residents, businesses and other interested groups have been consulted so that their views may be taken into account.

The total cost of the enhancements to the road to create the ZIP Bus Priority Corridor is £35m. This has allowed for significant improvements for bus passengers, cyclists, pedestrians and all road users:

For bus passengers:

Live Bus Stop Timetable Information
  • Enhanced waiting facilities, including new high quality bus shelters with seating, lighting, CCTV, electronic real time displays with audio relay and information points giving travel details
  • Public information terminals with provision for smart card technology
  • Large print timetables and tactile paving for the visually impaired
  • High kerbs at bus stops for level access
  • Bus priority at major junctions and bus lanes to improve service reliability

For cyclists:

  • The bus lanes are designed for cyclists to use also. The speed limits will be reduced along the route to 30mph to make it safer for cyclists. Where there are no bus lanes and there is sufficient space, on- and off-road cycle routes will be provided.
  • New toucan crossings will help cyclists to cross the road
  • Additional cycle parking is being provided at local shops and churches
  • Off-road cycleways will link to the local cycle network

For pedestrians:

  • New pedestrian refuges
  • Pelican crossings upgraded to puffin crossings for increased safety
  • Tactile paving on all side road crossings
  • New footway surfacing and kerbs

For all road users:

  • Reduced speed limits to aid road safety
  • New road surfaces throughout the route
  • Better parking facilities at local shops
  • New street lighting
  • New surface water drainage
  • Improvements to forecourts of local shops and churches
  • Large areas of trees, shrubs and bedding along the route
