This project is being part-funded by the Department for Transport
We know that bus users want a reliable and safe service that is easy to use, and our new ZIP bus shelters are designed to meet these needs.
All bus stops along the ZIP route benefit from CCTV surveillance, which provides traffic monitoring and security cover. For increased safety, the cameras also monitor the car parking areas in Widley, Purbrook (front and rear), Waterlooville, Cowplain, Horndean and Clanfield.
To further enhance security, as well as providing travel information, display screens and information points are included in our bus stops. The screens will display the actual expected times of the next four buses, and have an additional aural mode for visually impaired passengers, which will be activated by a special fob (click here to request a fob to activate aural mode at bus stops). However, the system required to operate the Real Time Passenger Information service is technically advanced, and we have been sharing the work spearheaded by Portsmouth City Council to put this in place. This has proved more difficult than expected, and we are currently awaiting the latest information from Portsmouth City Council as to how the project will proceed. We want to put in place the Real Time Passenger Information service as soon as possible, because we recognise that it is an important passenger benefit. We will update this section as soon as further information is available.
Travel information buttons have been installed in all bus stops between Widley and Waterlooville. Pressing the button will link you to a Traveline operator who will give you travel directions on public transport.
In addition to key fob activation of the information screens, special features for people with restricted mobility or visibility include bus kerbs, and for the Waterlooville to Clanfield section an illuminated timetable case on the bus stop pole.
The buses on the ZIP route are called Omnicity and are manufactured in Poland and Sweden by Scania. Here are some vital statistics:

The driver's cab has air conditioning, and the heating is supplied by convectors in the saloon. The destination screens are Hanover LEDs. The step entrance has a kneeling facility and a manual ramp for the disabled and wheelchairs.
Queensbury Shelters, our contractor for the bus stops, has been commissioned to design and build all the bus shelters, bus stop poles and associated facilities for bus stops between Purbrook and Clanfield.
To ensure the shelters meet the needs of all, they have been designed with the help of a bus users' forum group. The forum comprises representatives from local disabled and bus passenger groups and from Hampshire County Council, Havant Borough Council and East Hants District Council.
In terms of design factors, and reflecting the different needs of users and those who purchase and finally own the bus shelters, the new shelters incorporate the following features:
For Users: Seating with extra handhold, contrasting colours and rear-lit bus timetables to aid the visually impaired, clear unobstructed side panels so waiting passengers can see approaching buses, information point, and guidance studs
Purchaser: (Hampshire County Council) ZIP brand, real-time bus travel information, CCTV coverage of all bus stops, high kerb access at all stops, and bus shelters at all stops
Owners: (Havant/East Hants councils) minium maintenace, low electrical power requirement, advertising panels, and good vandal resistance
