Everest Community College
Sherborne St John, Hampshire
Everest Community College and Youth Service Building provide state of the art facilities and a stimulating and inspirational environment for staff, pupils and the wider community within a landmark building.
This opportunity has been provided by the adjacent County Council development together with funding from sale of the existing school site and from Borough Council and developer contributions. The scheme provides education accommodation together with substantial community facilities, including meeting rooms, a health and fitness suite and floodlit sports facilities.
Access to the college and community spaces is gained from a new public square via an internal street which is revealed at the entrance as double height glazed elevation behind a colonnade with a deep overhang. The external landscape design and courtyards are unified by a theme of a mathematical relationship contained within the Fibonacci series which permeates nature, architecture, art, mathematics and music.
The construction of the new campus is designed around sustainable objectives, maximising low energy design and natural ventilation including night time cooling, an array of photo-voltaic cells, presence and daylight dimming of the lighting and the planned installation of a wind turbine in 2008. It is anticipated that this will have positive impact on running costs and be of educational benefit for building users and pupils via exported information from the building management system.
The Project received a Commendation at the Civic Trust Awards in 2008.
