Gilbert White's House and The Oates Museum, Selborne, Hampshire
The Listed Grade I home of the 18th Century Hampshire naturalist is a complex building, with parts dating from 1610 to the 1930s. Restoration costs of nearly £2 million were assisted by a grant from the HLF which enabled the development of a field study centre for use by schools and the complete repair of 17 different roofs, the mechanical and electrical services, joinery and other fabric and the redecoration of this extremely popular museum. The building remained open to the public almost throughout the whole works. The project has received a number of awards including an RIBA Conservation Commendation.
