The Great Hall, Winchester

Restoration
The Great Hall
, one of Hampshire’s greatest historic treasures, underwent an extensive programme of refurbishment and restoration in the late 1990's.

Work has included major repairs to the roof with the aid of a Heritage Lottery grant. The grandeur of the hall has been restored by removing the shop from the interior and converting the adjacent offices to create a new entrance, shop and exhibition gallery describing the history of Winchester Castle and Great Hall.

A major adornment within the Great Hall has been the installation of a pair of gates in 1983 designed and crafted by Anthony Robertson to celebrate the Royal Wedding of the Prince of Wales. The gates, made of stainless steel were constructed to fill the arches formed in 1873 by T H Wyatt, and form the connection to the adjacent modern law courts.

A significant improvement externally has been the re-creation of a small ‘medieval’ garden to the south of the Hall from former wasteland. The garden, designed by Dr Sylvia Lansburg, was opened in 1986.
