Hackney Community College, London
New Further Education college
This major new further education college campus completed in 1997 was designed
by Hampshire County Architects in partnership with a local private practice,
Perkins Ogden Architects and Professor Sir Colin Stansfield-Smith, the former
County Architect.
Set in the heart of the East End, less than a mile from the City of London, the buildings centre around a number of courtyards of civic scale which provide a central focus and a secure environment for the students.
Replacing a large number of outdated buildings dotted around Hackney this campus for some 4000 students aimed to rejuvenate a run down area.
Three-storey teaching accommodation blocks are linked by a full height
timber and concrete colonnade which supports both sun shading and fabric
canopies to protect pedestrians from the weather. A number of magnificent
mature plane trees were also retained as part of the design.
