The Household Cavalry Museum

The Household Cavalry Museum Trust appointed Hampshire County Council Architects to help them realise their ambition to create a new museum which would allow the public to gain a unique ‘behind the scenes’ insight into the operational and ceremonial roles of the Household Cavalry. This project has transformed a corner of the ground floor at Horse Guards, London and for the first time gives the public access into the original C18th stables. The experience offers the visitor an understanding of the historic setting, the role of the Queen’s Life Guard and the story of the Regiment.

A highlight of the Museum is the opportunity to view a working stable via a glazed screen and watch troopers tending to their horses before going on guard duty. The Museum also houses many of the Regiment’s historic treasures which are now on public display for the first time through an interpretive exhibition in three galleries designed with specialist exhibition design consultancy At Large. Heritage Lottery Funding contributed to the project which stands as an exemplar of what can be achieved in historic buildings within The Crown Estate.

The main contract works were completed in May 2007 followed by a fast track exhibition fit-out over six weeks managed separately by the Client in time for the Royal opening by Her Majesty the Queen on June 12 which was followed by a spectacular Pageant on Horse Guards Parade put on by members of the Household Cavalry Regiment.
