Hythe Primary School, Hythe

Replacement children’s play area
When a new hall was built at Hythe Primary School it encroached into an existing play court. A brief was developed with the School, pupils and the School’s Landscape Programme to replace the area lost to the hall and develop an area for quiet passive recreation.
The site chosen was tucked into a corner of the school’s grounds situated within an area formally occupied by two temporary classrooms between the school and an infrequently used, single track railway line serving Fawley Power station.

The main body of the space was designed around an oval. In additional two seating carriages were designed to project into the space with timber pergolas constructed to provide shade and patterning onto a contrasting surface. The carriages passed through a series of rising timber posts painted in vibrant colours representing the colours of the rainbow, and planting designed to provide seasonal variety and contrast with the posts.
