Portsmouth University Faculty of Environment
This new faculty building, amongst others, Portsmouth University’s School of Architecture.
The building forms a containment on three sides of a new collegiate quad. The three-storey structure centres around a full height void which is the central forum for exhibition and university events. The wings of studios and teaching accommodation are punctured by vertical towers which contain stairs, services, and glazed roof top plant rooms also acting as ventilation chimneys.
In contrast to the strong masonry forms of the lower floors, the lighter
glazed top floor of the building is set back from the facade to respect
the scale of surrounding buildings and create a roof terrace social area.
Natural timber, rendered and plastered load-bearing brickwork provide a
simple palette of high quality materials throughout.
