Hampshire Record Office, Winchester

Hampshire Record Office contains many great treasures including medieval charters and accounts, and letters from monarchs and prime ministers. The new building, opened in 1993, was designed to replace existing facilities which over capacity.

Strong rooms, containing almost 10 miles of shelving, are arranged on three floors encased in a massive thermally insulated brick enclosure providing security and a steady-state environment. Contrasting glazed areas on the top floor and garden elevation contain the public search room and staff accommodation.

Landscaping around the building responds to a new public footpath created to follow a natural desire line running from the station towards the centre of the City.
