Serles House, Winchester, Hampshire
Extensive conservation work has been carried out to Serle’s House,
a listed grade II* house built around 1732 owned by Hampshire County Council
to ensure continuity of the Museum of The Hampshire Regiment and provide
modern facilities for major meetings and receptions. The building is a
good example of the English baroque style of architecture and has been
attributed to Thomas Archer. It had been the property of the MoD for over
one hundred years when, as it became redundant, the County Council purchased
it. The surviving historic elements including the external fabric, the
first floor and grand staircase have been preserved as part of the refurbishment
works. The interior design is complementary to the historic building fabric.
The Museum of the Hampshire Regiment on the ground floor has been significantly
refurbished and is open for residents and visitors to Hampshire.
