Shepherds Down Special School, Winchester
Playground Improvements
The landscape group have, for the past five years, been working with Shepherds Down Special School to develop their grounds for the long term future and benefit of the children and staff.
A site strategy was adopted to implement four phases of playground improvements over a five year period and sought to relocate the children's activity areas away from the noisier side of the site adjacent to the M3 motorway.
The strategy has transformed a dull, featureless site into an attractive and stimulating area which is now greatly enjoyed by the children who use it. The children also benefit greatly from the outdoor classroom areas and the staff too value the difference that has been made.
The latest phase has developed a linked boardwalk, study area and viewing platform system within a recently acquired woodland strip along the western boundary. This bluebell wood will present the school with a unique and colourful sensory area and will in time produce hazel coppice to be used by a local artist.
