Thornden hall, Thornden School, Chandler's Ford
The aim of the project was to create an auditorium with acoustics particularly suitable for musical performances. The building is now used by the school, Hampshire County Youth Orchestra, other schools and local community groups.
The building comprises a 390 seat auditorium, rear stage area, instrument store, first floor plant room, foyer, music and drama classrooms, music library, offices and foyer space.
The brickwork was chosen to contrast with the existing school and identify the building as a separate public facility. The material adds interest to the surfaces and reduces the scale of the building both externally and internally while creating a robust finish. Masonry diaphragm walls provide the necessary acoustic mass with surface relief provided by the brickwork to break up the large planar surfaces preventing unwanted reflected sound paths.
The Thornden Hall was awarded the Brick Development Awarded the Best Structural
use of Brick award for 2003.
Civic Trust Awards 2005 - Commendation.
