About Calshot

Calshot Activities Centre is one of the largest Outdoor Education Centres in Britain. We have a reputation for excellence and professionalism and operate to the highest safety standards.

Calshot is the largest of Hampshire’s four Outdoor Centres. We offer residential and non-residential courses in a number of exciting field study, water and landbased activities.

Situated in a unique position on the shores of the Solent, our magnificent setting gives immediate access to the country’s most popular watersports location and a diverse number of field study sites both ashore and afloat.

Ashore, historic hangars accommodate a state of the art climbing complex, the only indoor Velodrome in Southern England and a dry Ski Slope.

The range of activities taught at the Centre includes Field Studies both ashore and afloat, Canoeing, Dinghy Sailing, Windsurfing, Powerboating, Downhill Skiing, Snowboarding, Rock Climbing, Track Cycling, Mountain Biking, Archery, Orienteering, High Ropes and Development Training.

Calshot has close links with National Governing Bodies for all the activities we teach. We also have links with national field study organisations and geographical and ecological teaching associations. We deliver courses from novice to expert, including instructor training and assessment, to both individuals and groups. The RYA for example, run many coach & trainer courses from Calshot because of our superb location and facilities.

The Staff

We have 35 full time teaching staff in addition to 30 support services staff who provide the centre with food, accommodation, technical and admin support. This strong team enables us to run Calshot for fifty weeks a year, seven days a week, and is our greatest resource.

Field Study tutors teach a variety of topics both in the New Forest, along the coastline, and afloat on the Solent. Students vary from Key Stage 2 to AS/A2 level. Tutors are experts in a variety of fields and educated to degree level in geographical, ecological or environmental disciplines.

Instructors work with land and water based activity courses. From Windsurfing Trainers, Dinghy and Kayak Coaches to Mountain Instructors and Track Cycling coaches, we have them all. Consequently we are able to offer our clients and staff an unrivalled opportunity to benefit from their expertise, whether on a formal course or ‘top tips’ when out playing after work!

Field Studies Department

The department is based in its own building and has excellent facilities. We have four classrooms with advanced computer facilities, along with basic and advanced field and classroom equipment, drying rooms and office space.

We have our own on-site tudor castle, as well as a trawler/survey vessel and seawater aquaria.

The Solent sea shore provides some diverse environments, with the New Forest close at hand, making this a department rich with resources and field sites.

Studies in geography, ecology, environmental studies and history are complemented at Key Stage 2 by a variety of land based activities.

At secondary level, Key Stage 3 students investigate geography and science in more depth, but complement their outdoor learning with adventurous activities.

GCSE and AS/A2 students follow modules within their geography and biology specifications, often with the aim of completing their personal investigations whilst at Calshot.

Tutor Post

This post would suit an applicant who wishes to begin a career in field studies and outdoor education. A degree in geography, biology or an environmental discipline is essential. You will be trained to teach across the age range from infant and lower primary to upper secondary school level.

As you will mostly be working with primary groups whose programme includes adventurous activities an interest in outdoor sports is highly desirable.

Skills and qualifications in our land based activities are advantageous. You may however have a range of outdoor activities experience, but no formal instructional qualifications.

A clean driving licence held for at least 2 years is essential and a D1 or PCV entitlement are highly desirable.
You must in any case be capable of passing the PCV medical requirements.

Tutors will be trained to teach field studies initially to primary school children and then to secondary school students. Experience of teaching and working with children is desirable, and the ability to engage and encourage learning is essential.

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated staff who believe in the value of outdoor learning. You should be a team player, but have the ability to work unsupervised flexibly and professionally.

You will need good communication and ICT skills and a willingness to undergo training to reach required instructional standards in a range of land-based adventurous activities.

Training

During the initial period of your employment you will be trained to teach field studies to Key Stage 2 & 3 students. This will involve observation of experienced tutors, team-teaching, and then assessment of your teaching.

You will also be trained in climbing, skiing, archery and our initiative course. The format for this is to develop your personal and coaching skills in each activity, before observing and then being assessed teaching groups.

As well as training in teaching and activity instruction we will cover issues such as child protection, manual handling and first aid, as well as skills related to crewing our trawler.

Ongoing training throughout the year will broaden your ability to teach across the age range in field studies and expand your personal and coaching skills in our range of adventurous landbased activities.

Accommodation

We have self-catering accommodation available. Some of this is on-site whilst the rest is approximately one mile away in Calshot village. Staff have individual rooms, with a communal lounge, kitchen and bathroom facilities. Alternatively staff can choose to arrange their own accommodation locally.

Monthly rent is currently £220 (deducted at source) and includes all utilities except phone call charges. Meals may be purchased from the centre at a subsidised rate or staff may cater for themselves.

Uniform

We provide staff uniform, believing it is important that our staff are easily recognisable. You will be provided with polo shirts, fleece and jacket for land based activities, and full waterproofs and buoyancy aid for on the water.

Many staff also take advantage of some of the discounted rates we have available from leading manufacturers.

The Bare Facts

Our conditions take a lot of beating, look at this:
Tutors work Monday to Friday, plus up to 14 weekends per year.

The normal teaching day is from 9 am to 5.30 pm plus two evenings per week, either teaching or acting in a pastoral role working with a residential course.

Thanks to our Time Off In Lieu system, this averages out to a 37 hour week over the year. TOIL is given for each working weekend, along with a pay enhancement of 50% for weekends and 100% for bank holidays.

Paid holiday entitlement is 24 days plus 8 bank holidays per year, and an opportunity to tap into some of the best training in the country!

Salary

During the initial training months as a probationary tutor you will be paid in the salary range £13,224 to £14,448 per annum (pay award pending).

Subject to satisfactory performance and on completion of your probationary year opportunities may be available to apply for posts in the salary range £14,1586 to £16,416 per annum (pay award pending)
