General Guidance on Recruiting Teaching Staff
It is always a good idea to work back from when you wish to have the new member of teaching staff in post and of course bearing in mind the resignation dates (see below).

Please use this example of the shortest time span that you could allow for a Headteacher recruitment for an appointment to commence on 1 September. Extra time can be added to the process as you work back.
Resignation date for Headteacher: 30 April
(This will mean your interview dates will need to be before 30 April)
Interviews: A week before 30th (usually 2 days)
(You should allow at least 10 working days to request references and chase
before you have the interviews)
Request references: 2nd week of April
Shortlisting: Day before references are requested
Closing date for applications: Beginning of April
Advert in TES & Hantsweb: Mid March (on a Friday)
(You should allow at least two weeks after advert is placed for closing
date)
This represents the shortest amount of time feasible but it is recommended that governing bodies allow themselves more time than this if possible.
