School Remodelling

Developing Support Staff Roles

Background

Support staff already play an essential role in supporting the provision of quality education in schools. However, as schools move into the remodelling agenda and seek ways to implement the National Agreement the roles of support staff will change. Schools will develop their workforce in a way which meets local needs and context. In addition to the employment of support staff in traditional roles schools may be looking to develop new roles for support staff with a view to raising standards and tackling workload issues.

EPS Advice and Contacts

EPS staff will continue to support schools in periods of changing roles with advice on role profiles (job descriptions/person specifications), pay and conditions, contractual arrangements and restructuring of existing staff. Please use your normal EPS contacts for these issues or access contact details on this website.

On-line resources

In addition to EPS advice there are a number of on-line resources available to schools concerning the development of support staff roles:

Higher Level Teaching Assistants Advice and Guidance is available through this website including details of the provision of funding to support the development of HLTAs in Hampshire Schools and links to the national HLTA website.

School Support Staff – The way forward This national guidance containing model job profiles, employment good practice and advice on training and development of school support staff has been agreed by the National Joint Council (NJC) for Local Government Services.

Looking for a bursar This DfES guide is written in the context of the remodelling agenda and intends to assist schools who may be thinking of taking on a bursar or developing the contribution of someone already employed by the school.
