School Remodelling

Understanding Remodelling

School Remodelling is a national Government initiative aimed at raising standards and tackling workloads in schools. It has arisen in a context of rising concerns about workload and recruitment and retention issues in schools.  The Remodelling is about much more than compliance with the new statutory terms and conditions for teachers.

School Remodelling is about:

  • Having a vision for your school

  • A process of change management to shape schools of the future

  • Leading change through staff in schools – not just coping with change and “holding on”

  • Locally managed solutions – created by your school for your school

  • Providing a sustainable framework for achieving high standards

  • Work-life balance – tackling workloads for the benefit of all staff

  • Making the most effective use of resources

  • Giving teachers time and resources to focus on teaching and learning

  • Creativity and innovation – in everything the school does

  • A way of working for the future – an inclusive and effective work culture

  • Recognising where you are now and building upon current success

  • Collaboration and networking between schools

  • Developing a professional support staff team to support learning

School Remodelling achieves:

  • A focus on actions that improve learning

  • A school that is ready for the future and proactively plans to realise its vision

  • A school that attracts and retains high quality motivated staff based upon high staff morale

  • A shared understanding of the direction of the school and workforce involvement in decision making at many levels

  • A work-life balance that is acceptable to the whole workforce

  • Sustainable solutions to the national agreement for teachers that fit with the future vision of your school

  • A framework to bring together the divergent strategies and agenda which schools face

  • A strategy for school improvement that builds upon current vision and achievements

Hampshire’s strategy:

Hampshire LEA is committed to facilitating and supporting development of the remodelling agenda in Hampshire schools.  Our strategy aims to provide support and challenge to schools in getting the most from the remodelling agenda and includes the following key elements:

  • The creation of dedicated remodelling adviser posts

  • Leading support for remodelling from across the Education Department – developing coherence and capacity

  • Training of remodelling consultants to support schools in the process including serving Headteachers and Inspectors/Advisors

  • Creating a lead post to support the development of support staff

  • Providing networking and “training” support to schools (see below)

  • Local consultation with Teachers’ Liaison Panel (including the local NUT) and support staff unions

  • Briefings for governors

  • Termly newsletter updated for schools

  • Current activities are summarised in our implementation plan which is regularly updated to reflect developments

Training support for schools:

To facilitate the development of the remodelling agenda in schools EPS is coordinating a programme of networking and training support for schools based upon the following principles:

  • Schools self-select a group of schools with whom they would wish to work on developing the remodelling agenda

  • The group receive a “launch” event to set the context and enable the schools to mobilise change in their school.  Typically a launch event will involve:

  • Examining the context of remodelling and developing understanding

  • Underpinning the schools’ vision for the future

  • Looking at ways of effecting change and remodelling in practice

  • Identifying ongoing support mechanisms

  • The group receive two follow-up events, at timescales to meet the needs of the schools involved, to develop and deepen understanding of the remodelling agenda and to support exploration of local solutions

  • The events are funded from a central budget provided  to LEAs to facilitate remodelling – there is no additional charge to the schools involved

  • The events include input from serving Hampshire Headteachers trained in the remodelling agenda

  • The contents are flexible and based upon the needs of the group

  • The group acts as a self-support network for each other

  • Each group is allocated an EPS consultant to use as a key contact between events

Summer 2005 -  over 340 Hampshire schools have already formed a group and undertaken their launch event. Please click on the link below to see a list of schools in network groups.
