Hampshire’s Soils

Introduction

Most of the soil in Hampshire has developed since the end of the last Ice Age, and reflects the complex interactions between geology, climate, landscape, land use and land management over this time period. The result is a wide variation in soil properties over tens of metres, and development of 17 different soil types. These can be split into three critical soil zones:
  • The Chalk Downlands
  • The Thames Basin and Western Weald
  • The Hampshire Basin and New Forest
