It aims to provide an introduction to travel plans, outline the benefits to be had from developing a plan and give practical, step by step advice on how to develop your own plan.

The guidance on this website can also be used by Higher Education establishments in developing a travel plan, although the Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability has produced specific guidance entitle Travel Planning for Sustainability: Guidance for Higher Education Institutions.

The County Council's Local Transport Plan (LTP) seeks to promote equity, limit traffic growth and improve the safety and amenity of local environments. Travel plans are therefore an important contribution to achieving the aims of the LTP, as well as the County Council's wider corporate objectives including 'Stewardship of the environment'.

What is a travel plan?

A workplace travel plan is also known as a staff travel plan, a green transport plan or a green commuter plan. It is a package of measures aimed at widening travel choices by all modes of transport and cutting unnecessary car use. Travel plans are increasingly taking in to consideration customers, visitors, business travel, fleet management and deliveries.

Employers are encouraged to recognise and take responsibility for the social and environmental impacts that their organisation has on its surroundings. Travel plans are intended to encourage businesses and employees to think about the best way of making a journey, taking into consideration its purpose, environmental impact, local conditions and whether any alternative options were available.

Writing a travel plan is a means of formalising a strategy for discouraging unnecessary business and commuter trips and encouraging the use of public transport, walking and cycling and also introducing more flexible working practices such as home working to reduce the need to travel. A good travel plan should also compliment other business strategies and policies.

Hampshire County Council has its own travel plan, which was adopted in May 2000 and is being constantly reviewed. More information about the plan can be found at www.hants.gov.uk/greentravel/.
