Pottery Sherds

Earthwork
Oliver's Battery or Priest's Croft. Large mound and irregular depression, possibly motte with double bailey. Now much reduced by ploughing. Site referred to in Saxon documents as 'The Monastic or Priest's House .... called King's Horse Croft.' Now part of village recreation ground. O.S.A. No. SU65 SE4. Ref: 1. Fortified Mansion (Remains)
Basing House. Ruins and fortifications of Tudor mansion built on the site of a Norman motte and bailey castle, and possible prehistoric fortifications. Virtually destroyed in the famous siege 1643-45 when Cromwell directed the final assault. The resultant ruins provided a plentiful supply of bricks for building in the village after the Civil War.
