Highclere Castle. Built circa 1840 on site of mediaeval bishops palace. Part 3 storeys, part 4 storeys. Building encases a smaller Georgian mansion, remodelled in 1774. Central 21/2 storey falleried inner hall with oak gothic staircase designed by Barry. Remaining interiors by Thomas Allom. Fine central tower with four corner towers. Faced in Bath stone with strapwork in Elizabethan style. Mullion and transom-cross type windows. Designed by Sir Charles Barry. Largest mansion in Hampshire and seat of the Earl of Carnarvon. O.S.A. London Lodge. Classical arched gateway flanked by coupled flat Ionic pilasters. Modillioned cornice, fine stone ornament and urn. The cornices, pilaster bases and other features are marked 'Coade, London 1773.' Coade stone is a reconstructed stone, but the recipe is now lost. Small single storey lodges on either side connected by curved screen walls.     T. & C.P. Act

Milford Lake House. Building erected on dam of a large artificial lake. Designed by William Kent as a summer house or pavilion. Central pedimented block with similar side wings. Built of yellow brick with some stone dressings, brick quoins and timber sash windows. Fine plaster-work in the salon. Later additions. The house faces the lake on a broad frontage.     T. & C.P. Act
