The village centre has grown amid the scattered ancient cottages, many of them timber-framed, which formed the hamlet to serve the tything of Crokeham in the extensive Saxon hundred and parish of Crondall. There are buildings representative of almost every period and style of village architecture.

An ancient Mummers Play is performed outside the two public houses and on a green each Boxing Day.
