Hartley Wintney developed as a main road village, first as a stopping place on the route from London to the Royal Palace at Odiham, and then as a coach stop on the London-Exeter turnpike road, now the A30.
The first village grew on the hill above the Priory for Cistercian nuns founded about 1190, and around the thirteenth century church, now replaced by a redbrick Victorian church.
Elvetham Hall was originally owned by the Seymour family and was rebuilt in 1861.
Cricket has been played on the village green for more than 200 years and the cricket club is one of the oldest in the country.
