| Mediaeval Village Site |
Yaldhurst Lane. Village name of Yaldhurst preserved as that of farm and lane. Assessed in Domesday Book. Traces of road visible as causeway 0.2m. high and 5.0m wide. Covered with grass but composed of shingle flints and flat rocks. Doubt remains over location of village. Centred on grid reference. O.S.A. No. SZ39 NW18. Ref: 1. Archaeological News Letter. | Salterns (Remains) |
First mentioned in 1132, and continued in use until 1865. Replaced by oyster beds. Now disused marsh- land with some enclosing banks. Circular site of mill, mound 1.2m. high and 12.0m. across remains. Also mould with overgrown brick structure and rectangular pond of unknown date. To south large saltern retaining bank ends in rectangular platform. Probably site of building. Centred on grid reference. Site of special scientific interest and of outstanding natural beauty. O.S.A.
