Page 265 - Ropley

Ropley lies some eight miles south west of Alton; it is the home of the Hampshire Hunt. Tradition has it that Ropley supplied the honey for William the Conqueror's mead. The church has been much restored but still shows the work of six or seven centuries ago. Of interest are the old aumbry and piscina, the fifteenth century font and an Elizabethan chalice. It seems likely that the Pilgrims Way from Winchester to Canterbury passed through the parish via the present Gascoigne Lane and Brislands Lane.
