Selborne is forever associated with Gilbert White, author of the National History of Selborne, whose house The Wakes is now open to the public. A recent addition to the Wakes is a museum to Captain Oates and a Field Centre for nature study. The church contains much thirteenth century work, the font is 800 years old, the chancel arch is Norman and there is a fine sixteenth century Flemish triptych.
