The name Hayling Island means Island of Hegel's people - the first Saxons to occupy this part of the coast. St. Mary's is an interesting thirteenth century church, which has in its churchyard the old village stocks and whipping post, and a yew tree which is believed to be almost a thousand years old. Included in this area is a part of the famous Hayling seaside resort.
