Charter House, 1899 by C.W. Bevis. Large city type office block in rich Flemish-Renaissance style. Four storeys and attic in red brick with lavish stone dressings. Narrow bow to acute angled corner. North and south corners are surmounted by octagonal domes with scalloped copper sheathing, surmounted by open cupolas. Tall corniced and pedimented chimney stacks. Eleven paired windows to upper floors, flanked by stone pilasters. Alternate bays have canted or bowed bay windows to first and second floors. Elaborate carved parapets over second floor. At eaves level over the bays, gables with elaborate stepped and shaped stone copings. Blind balustrades below sills on first floor. Ground floor has mostly modernised shop fronts. North angled return front similar but with recessed canted bay through three storeys. | T&CP Act |
