Gunboat yard
C.19
Haslar Gunboat Yard: Transverse Slipway and gunboat sheds. A unique building and repair yard for royal Navy gun boats and similar small vessels probably laid out in mid C.19. Alleged to be a design by I.K. Brunel, but this is not proven. Consists of a slipway with launching cradle leading to a transverse which connects with any one of 19 covered building/repair buildings. The buildings' and sheds' roofs are carried on a series of cast iron columns and wrought and cast-iron roof trusses of a delicate nature. The corrugated iron roof covering could well be part of the original design. Ref: Attentive to Our Duty (1986) Gosport Society pp.53-55.     SAM 505

Buildings

Gunboat Yard; miscellaneous buildings dating from the time of the founding of the Gunboat Yard. Some, although architecturally undistinguished are scheduled because of their group value. They include a single storey guard house, the house of a Senior Officer, the main gate and yard wall, a single storey brick built office and the building which housed the original steam engine for providing the power for the traverses.     SAM 506
