HANTSNET
Hampshire's Public Information Network
What is HANTSNET? | How to use pages from HANTSNET
What is HANTSNET?
Many of the pages you are viewing on Hantsweb have been taken from HANTSNET, Hampshire County Council's information and communication network. HANTSNET has been around for nearly a decade for County Council employees and people who work in other public service organisations in Hampshire. We are currently developing a new intranet service which will - eventually - completely replace Hantsnet.
Hantsnet contains thousands of pages of information, ranging from details of the County Council's services and statistics, to directories of useful addresses and more besides. It includes both public and Council internal information.
The public information in HANTSNET can be accessed in libraries and other information points across the county, and as you have discovered, is available on Hantsweb too. Because these pages look a little different from normal Web pages, please take a couple of minutes to read the how to use HANTSNET pages section below.

How to use pages from HANTSNET
The information presented in the Hantsweb pages that have been automatically extracted from the core HANTSNET system can, in general be used just like ordinary Web pages, but there are a few points to watch out for:
- Normally, where there is a hypertext link displayed on a HANTSNET page,
this will link you to another HANTSNET page. Occasionally, the link may point
to a page which is not available to outside access, and so the link will not
work. We regret that we have no way of detecting and eliminating such links at
the present time.
- Similarly, some links on the original HANTSNET page will refer to services
or applications that work on HANTSNET but not the Web. The text of these links
will be displayed, but the link itself will be disabled.
- HANTSNET is a character-based system, driven by function keys. You may
occasionally encounter messages referring to the HANTSNET function keys, such
as "Press PF10 for more", or "PF12 to return".
Please ignore these messages and use your Web browser's
normal navigation facilities.
- Sometimes in HANTSNET it is necessary to press the terminal's ENTER key to
display more information held 'under' a HANTSNET page. Where this occurs our
automatic conversion routine should give you a link reading:
Select here to continue beyond this page
(nb this link is just for demonstration, it doesn't actually point to anything!) - Sometimes HANTSNET internal email addresses will be given as contact points
- they are often referred to as "PROFS" addresses. To send email to a
HANTSNET user, simply add the domain name hants.gov.uk - so to send
email to HANTSNET address HANTSINF (our general enquiries address), you
would actually send to hantsinf@hants.gov.uk
- Some telephone numbers given in these pages may be in the format of an
internal extention number, eg. ext 5000. Unless otherwise stated, this
would be an extension of our main switchboard on Winchester (01962)
841841. However, all extensions can be dialled direct by adding the area
code for Winchester ( which is 01962) and the numbers 84 as a
prefix. So, to dial extension 5000 you simply dial 01962 845000.
For people calling from outside the United Kingdom, drop the initial 0 from the Winchester area code and add your international access code followed by 44 for the United Kingdom. So to call our main switchboard dial +44 1962 841841. The + represents your country's international access code (e.g. 00 in most European countries, 011 in North America).
We hope that you will find our service easy to use and full of useful information. If you want any more information about Hampshire please e-mail hantsinf@hants.gov.uk. If you have any problems using HANTSWEB, please e-mail our help address hantshelp@hants.gov.uk. For general comments, good or bad, please e-mail the Web Manager at hantsweb@hants.gov.uk.
