"The Seagull"A Comedy by Anton Chekhov. Translated by Tom Stoppard This 1997 translation by Tom Stoppard was critically acclaimed when it opened at the Old Vic. Described by the critics as 'breathtaking' and of the translation; 'never till now have I seen one which so persuasively catches the tragi-comic mood of the writing'. The unravelling of Chekhov's "The Seagull" confronts us with scenes showing almost every character forlornly besotted with someone who cannot reciprocate; yet Chekhov goes on to describe his play as "a comedy with much talk about literature and five tons of love". Indeed, further to this, he selects a sub-title "A Comedy in Four Acts" conjuring up our own expectations and anticipation of what is to follow. Directed by Laurie Noble 8th to 15th November at 7.45pm. Tickets £6. |
