Ringwood

The parish of Ringwood is situated between the New Forest to the east and the River Avon to the west. A wide variety of Historic Landscape types are present with the Avon valley showing , on the western borders of the parish, a good variety of "valley floor" Historic Landscape types.

Ringwood itself has grown considerably in the 20th century. South of Ringwood next to the valley floor there are extensively cultivated small to medium regular fields with straight largely treeless boundaries (historic landscape types 1.7 and 1.10). Very similar patterns of field with sinous boundaries and scattered trees, probably reflecting older enclosure (type 1.16) lie further from the river (bottom centre of photo). East of Ringwood there is a large area of small rectilinear paddocks and fields with thick hedges (type 1.9) intermixed with copses and small woods and scattered settlement, much of which is quite recent (type 9.2). These areas partly reflect enclosure of former heathland on the righthand margin of the aerial photo, the western edge of the New Forest can be seen showing a mixture of open heath (type 5.1), heathland plantation; and unenclosed wood pasture. Numerous paths and tracks can be seen splaying out into the heathland.
