PR 1698
FORMER GOSPORT RAILWAY STATION REVAMP ON TRACK
The remains of Gosport railway station are set for a revamp, after Hampshire County Council's development brief for the site was approved by Gosport Borough Council's Transportation and Planning Sub Board.
The brief, which was prepared in consultation with the Borough Council and English Heritage, has already been approved by the County Council's Buildings, Land and Procurement Panel, and sets out how the remains the station, last used in 1969, could be restored to its former glory. Up to 14 new homes and commercial units could be developed, along with a `mini museum' telling the story of the station and railways in Gosport.
Following public consultation of the brief, the site will be marketed to potential developers early in the new year. The successful developer will need to satisfy the County Council and Gosport Borough Council that it can achieve the high standard necessary for one of Gosport's most prominent historic landmarks.
Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Ken Thornber, said: "Gosport Railway Station is a GradeII listed, 19th Century building and an important part of the town's history. This brief offers the prospect of a scheme which will ensure that the remaining structures of the station can be brought back into use and can be appreciated and enjoyed by the people of Gosport for generations to come."
