NEW RECYCLING CENTRE FOR ANDOVER A STEP CLOSER
Andover residents are one step closer to having a new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) after Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Ken Thornber, approved the project.
It is proposed that the new HWRC is built on the Walworth Industrial Estate, Andover, in order to accommodate the increased demand for the service and provide a much improved public facility.
The existing site which serves Andover is a medium sized `single level' facility located in Shepherds Spring Lane. In 2005/06 the site received 8,258 tonnes of waste, 57 per cent of which was recycled. During busy periods the site can get very congested particularly at weekends during the summer months. As a `single level' site the compound has to be closed temporarily (for approximately 20 minutes) each time a waste container is serviced, causing cars to queue - sometimes stretching as far back as the roundabout at the end of Shepherds Spring Lane.
The new site at Walworth Industrial Estate, on land between Scott Close and Livingstone Road, would be a larger `split level' HWRC with more car parking, additional waste containers, and on site queuing for up to 30 cars, preventing queues on the main highway.
Councillor Thornber said: "This project is part of wider improvement programme for all HWRCs across Hampshire. The aim is to provide residents with quicker and easier access to these key frontline facilities, and to help increase the average annual recycling rate for all HWRCs towards our target of 65 per cent.
"This new site will provide a new and improved HWRC for the residents of Andover and will allow more materials to be returned to productive use."
A formal planning application seeking approval to build the new facility is expected to be submitted later this year.
