Aims

The Service aims to provide a high quality advisory and analytical service relating to food, drink, drugs, toys, toxicological materials and environmental samples. A comprehensive instrumental analysis service is offered covering trace metal analysis and a wide range of chromatographic techniques using state-of-the-art equipment.

Trace Element Analysis

Our impressive array of modern equipment includes flame and furnace atomic absorption spectophotometers and two inductively coupled plasma spectrometers - all equiped with autosamplers.

A full range of other elements can be determined in human and animal specimens, foods, drinks, water, toys and occupational and environmental samples (eg air pollution, workplace monitoring).

Chromatographic Analysis

Our state-of-the-art instrumentation includes gas chromatographs, high performance liquid chromatographs, ion chromatographs and a full range of detectors including GC-MS facilities.

Examples of NAMAS accredited analyses are: congeners in spirit drinks, aflotoxins in nuts, additives in foods and drinks, alcohol and drugs in blood and urine, and pesticides in foods.

Toxicological Analysis

The laboratory analyses blood and urine for substances of coccupational and environmental importance (biological monitoring) using Health and safety approved methods (eg Solvents in the work place, lead from welders). Post mortem specimens are analysed for HM Coroner and for veterinary practitioners. Drugs of abuse can be identified, and medicines and drugs can be assayed for compliance with specified compositional claims. Infra red and ultra violet spectrophotometers are also available for forensic analyses.
