The Public Analyst is a key figure in the enforcement of food law. The Food Safety Act 1990 requires every food authority in England and Wales to appoint one or more Public Analysts. Hampshire County Council has appointed four Public Analysts, namely:-

These are the principle scientific advisers to the food authority and are responsible for the analysis of food samples submitted to the Scientific Service and for the interpretation of the results of analysis to check that they comply with the law.
Their expert opinions are given on official Food Safety Act certificates and they often have to give expert evidence in Court. The qualifications of Public Analysts are prescribed by law.
