Flammability testing on teddy bear The Scientific Service has considerable experience in the chemical, microbiological and physical testing of toys.

Proper testing and 'CE' certification of toys protects the consumer, retailer, importer and manufacturer.

Our experts test toys in accordance with the Toys (Safety) Regulations 1995 using European Standard methods. Advice on the correct design and manufacture of toys is also available.

Injuries can be caused by sharp points or edges. Toxic metals such as lead in paints can be ingested by children causing illness. Some toys are flammable and can lead to horrible burns. Some toy parts can be detached and easily swallowed by a child causing injury. Tests are carried out to highlight problems such as these.

CHARGES

Charges payable for scientific advice and analysis. For complaints from the public regarding faulty or dangerous toys the first contact is the Trading Standards Department.

WHO USES THESE SERVICES?

Local government particularly Trading Standards Service who monitor toys coming through ports and in shops, toy producers particularly small "cottage industry" firms, voluntary organisations.
