The Scientific Service offers scientific advice, chemical analysis and microbiological testing of all sorts of waters.
Drinking Water
- Regulations describe the required quality of public mains water, private water supplies (e.g. from wells) and bottled waters. These are tested for purity including nitrate, bacteria, hardness, lead and other trace substances.
Bathing Water
- Swimming pool waters are tested for both chemical and bacteriological standards of hygiene. Sea water from bathing beaches are tested to ensure they meet EC standards.
River Water
- Rivers and lakes may be used for boating and other activities. The water is tested for harmful pollution.
Cooling Systems Water
- Investigations are carried out on the water in cooling towers and systems. The water is tested for harmful pathogens such as Legionella and Salmonella.
CHARGES
Charges payable for scientific advice and analysis. Some work free if delivered via Environmental Health or Trading Standards Service.
WHO USES THESE SERVICES?
The public, local government department especially Environmental Health departments, central government, old people's homes.
