This photo, taken towards the end of the 19th century near Alton, Hampshire.

It shows an old couple in a field, seated in front of a stook (bundles of wheat).

We know it's late summer because that is when the wheat crop is harvested.

In part of the field the crop is standing, but they are leaning against a stook.

The old couple have stopped to rest and eat. You can see a stoneware flagon by the woman's feet and a lunch pail in her lap.
