By using the documents available in the Record Office we can find and trace individuals and families. Gypsies can often be identified in official documents at certain times of the year due to the seasonal nature of the work they undertook. For example, the register of baptisms at Binsted lists Gypsy children who were baptised at the beginning of the hop picking season. Other useful sources include parish records, school admission registers, log books and marriage registers. Another important source is the census which can tell us where Gypsy Traveller families were at the time of the census and where they came from.
