John Golden Short of Lyndhurst John Golden
Short was a well-known chemist and photographer working in Lyndhurst in the New
Forest, operating from 1878 onwards. He never seems to have strayed far from
Lyndhurst and its environs in taking his photographs. He would have mostly used
a half-plate field camera, but for more detailed work he used a much larger
studio camera (taking glass plates measuring 14 by 11 inches). Short captured
different elements of Gypsy life in Hampshire and his photographs provide a
valuable historical record of a lifestyle that was to change dramatically.
