About Robert May's School
Robert May's School was founded in 1694 with money bequested in the will of Robert May. Since then the school has continued to serve the local community in the area around Odiham, Hook, and Hartley Wintney. The school enjoys a pleasant rural location and has modern buildings. The examination results are consistently some of the best in the County and in 1996 90% of our Year 11 pupils continued into full time sixth form and further education.
In Years 7 - 9 pupils study:
In Years 10 and 11 pupils can study:
Separate, detailed information on the Year 10/11 curriculum will be available during the Spring Term of Year 9.
It is the School’s policy that all students are set homework appropriate to
their age and ability. Some departments will set homework on a weekly basis
while others will set assignments over a longer period of time. In most cases
teachers will set work on the same day each week, but on occasions this may
vary in order to make the homework more closely related to class work. A
homework timetable is provided at the start of each academic year. As there
will be a wide variety of tasks set by teachers, the amount of time students
spend on homework will vary, but as a general guide we would expect about one
and a half hours of additional study per evening in the lower school, and two
hours in the upper school. The homework assignments will have been designed by subject teachers with a
view to encouraging and fostering in their students good private study habits
and to help in the development of skills and acquisition of knowledge. There
are a number of ways you can help your son/daughter with their homework. As
with all aspects of school work, parental interest and support are invaluable.
You could help by: 1
Trying to ensure that there is a quiet place for private study at home. 2
Checking your child’s Homework Diary on a regular basis is a very good way
for you to ensure homework is being completed. Students have to record
homework assignments in their diaries and we would ask you to sign the diary
once a week in order to ensure that you are being shown the diary on a regular
basis. 3
Encouraging your child to join and use a local Public Library as well as making
full use of our own extensive Library Resource Centre which is open until
3.30pm Monday to Thursday. 4
Encouraging your child to read over and review the work that he/she has done
during the day. 5
Making sure your child has a dictionary to which he/she can easily refer. Should
repeated problems arise over homework, you should contact your child’s Head
of Year or the appropriate Head of Department. Similarly, contact will be
made with you if a pattern of unsatisfactory homework appears to be developing
with your child. We
hope that you will work with us to help your child benefit fully from the
homework programme.
The main clubs and activities held after school are:
(Some of these activities are seasonal)
An exchange with a school in Pennsylvania, USA is available to Year 10 students
- world events permitting. We are currently planning an exchange with a
school in Berlin for 2005.
All exchanges operate on the understanding that those taking part will host the foreign student in return. Other
residential trips occur during the year such as an activities week and
residential visits organised by the Heads of Year. There is normally a
ski trip in February and other visits often occur to other parts of Britain and
Europe.
Other visits and field trips occur both during and after school.
In Column 1, 5 + GCSE refers to the percentage of students who gained 5 or more
GCSEs at Grade A* - G. In Column 2, 5+ A* - C means the % of the 225 Year 11
students who took exams and gained 5 or more GCSEs in the top grades A*, A, B
and C. 73% of those woo took exams gained 5 or more GCSEs in the top grades

Trident
Students in Years 10 and 11 are encouraged to take part in Trident. This is a
charity which aims to help senior students in secondary schools prepare more
fully for adult life. It has three elements, work experience, community
involvement and personal challenge. All our students go on work experience at
some point in their final year. We also encourage students to take part in the
other two elements, through opportunities provided by the school or activities
in which the student is already involved. These types of activity are very
valuable experience for later life in employment and higher education. Large
numbers of our students gain Trident Gold awards.

Examination Results
In January 2004 the figure on roll was 226 (120 girls, 106 boys). These
students were aged 15 at the end of August 2004. One of these students did not
take exams due to a work related learning placement and 2 students are
currently in Year 10 and will take their GCSEs in June 2005. The figures in the
table below are based on the 225 students (120 girls, 105 boys) who took exams
