Providing Evidence

The aim of the programme is to provide support to schools on becoming healthier places for staff and students to work and learn. The National Healthy School Standard Guidance states that:

A healthy school is one that is successful in helping pupils do their best and build on their achievements. It is committed to on going improvement and development. It promotes physical and emotional health by providing accessible and relevant information and equipping pupils with the skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their health”

By developing a Travel Plan a school is showing its commitment toward the health and well being of its pupils and staff.  Travel Plans are recognised as sources of evidence for the focus areas within the Healthy School Standard:

  • Personal, Social and Health Education

  • Healthy eating

  • Physical activity

  • Emotional health and well-being

For example, in the guidance for assessing 'Physical Activity' as a core theme, one of the criteria is: 'encourages pupils, parents/carers and staff to walk or cycle to school under safe conditions, utilising the school travel plan'.
