comprising first floor hall over undercroft. The building was

the public on a regular basis. (The Trustees of King John's House

(76) The Well Head, Ashley : Grade II. C17. (Dr N Potter,
Chairman Ashley Parish Meeting)
The C17 well-house was of timber framed construction with thatched
roof. It was severely damaged by fire last year, and the remains
were carefully dismantled and put into store. The Parish has decided
that it would like to see the building reconstructed as it was an
important feature in this small rural hamlet. None of the Local
Authorities have claimed ownership so the Parish has undertaken the
task of guaranteeing restoration itself with the assistance of
private donations and grant aid. The timber frame will hopefully be
reconstructed as part of a course on the repair of timber framed
buildings to be run by the Historic Buildings Bureau and RICS this
summer. However costs will be incurred in the provision of materials
and specialist labour at a figure of approximately £3,800.00
(including VAT). As the building was such a big feature in the
hamlet and the local community is motivated to reconstruct it through
fund raising, I recommend that a grant of up to £1,900.00 (50%) be
offered on condition that:
(i) all works are carried out to the agreed
specification.
