Association Football in Hampshire until 1914 #16196
9. Association Football in Hampshire until 1914
by Norman Gannaway (1996)
This paper tells the story of Association Football in Hampshire from its earliest days at Winchester College, until the outbreak of the First World War. The paper examines the role of Winchester College in the development of the game and traces the emergence of club football in the county in the 1860s and 1870s, and the formation of the Hampshire Football Association in 1887 and Hampshire League in 1896.
Using newspaper accounts, archive material and club histories, it sheds light on the growth of the sport in cities, towns and villages across the county, and the flowering of teams such as Fordingbridge Turks, Bournemouth Rovers, Basingstoke Town, Portsmouth Association, Woolston Works and Southampton.
