Airfields
163. The majority of air travellers to and from Hampshire use the major London airports. This situation will continue during the Plan period. Nevertheless, aviation facilities will continue to have a role to play. For some of the airfields this role will generate an economic importance which extends beyond the county boundary. The increased use of these facilities can, however, create noise nuisance and other environmental problems and put increased demands on the transport network.
EC5 Proposals to expand and enhance the facilities :
(i) at Southampton International Airport, to maintain its regional role and improve operational safety or passenger facilities;
(ii) at Farnborough Airfield, to accommodate the development of a business aviation facility;
(iii) for business or general aviation at other airfields, including re-use of MoD airfields, which
(a) do not substantially expand existing uses or levels of activity;
(b) improve operational safety;
will be supported, except where there are overriding environmental, safety or transport objections and provided that such development is consistent with other policies in this Plan.
164. In recent years significant investment has been made at Southampton International Airport, which now offers a range of modern facilities. A steady expansion of services and throughput is expected, resulting in a growing contribution to the regional economy.
165. It is Government policy that Farnborough airfield be retained for use for business aviation. The airfield also hosts the biennial Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) show, an integral part of the promotion and marketing of the British aerospace industry. The County Council will work with the relevant agencies on the future of Farnborough airfield and seek ways to ensure the continuation of the SBAC show.
166. Considerable investment has been made in providing civil and military aviation facilities and infrastructure. The use, re-use, expansion or enhancement of these facilities will be considered in the light of their economic, employment or recreational advantages and environmental, safety and transport impact.
