In 1856, William Mortimore, the lord of the manor, donated some land next to Hatherden School for the building of a church for the village. William White was asked to design the church and so, the flint church with it's bright brick bands outside and brick lining inside, it's timber framed roof and small bellcote was built. William Mortimore was the driving force behind the public subscription which raised the necessary £724 for the building. The new church was consecrated by the Bishop of Winchester on 25th November 1857. Tragically on Tuesday 8th July 1975, Hatherden Church was struck by lightning and much of it was destroyed by a disastrous fire, only the bell tower, vestry, porch and the outer walls remained. The insurance policy didn't cover the cost of the repairs, everyone rallied together to raise the extra funds, some 20 months after the fire the new church was rededicated on Sunday 20th February 1977 at a ceremony led by the Bishop of Winchester.
