The Hampshire Foundation for Young Musicians is a charity set
up in 1994 to advance the music education of young people up to the age of 25
who reside in the County of Hampshire including the cities of Portsmouth and
Southampton or who are educated principally in the schools and colleges within
the geographical county.
The county has a rich musical heritage and The Foundation which is
an independent charity and private company, aims to ensure that the excellent
record of music is maintained and prospers.
Funds are available in the form of awards which enable musicians to undertake
studies or projects in connection with composition, conducting, instrumental
and vocal performance with grants, for example, for music tuition and
music course fees. Areas such as music in education, music technology,
musicology and participation in competitions of international standard
are included.
Regrettably funds are not available for the purchase of
musical instruments, equipment or sheet music.
The Foundation welcomes applications for grants for music tuition,
music course fees and other activities which complement music making within the
community.
- Candidates must be residents of Hampshire which includes the
cities of Portsmouth and Southampton or who are educated principally in the
schools and colleges of Hampshire.
- The award will be made at the discretion of the Board of
Directors whose decision shall be final.
- Scholarships will be awarded annually to enable musicians to
undertake studies or projects in connection with composition, conducting,
instrumental and vocal performance, music in education, music technology and
musicology. The scholarship must be used for the purpose for which it was
sought.
- The scholarship will entitle each holder to financial
assistance up to 50% of the cost up to such maximum award as is from time to
time agreed during the financial year (April to March) in which the scholarship
is awarded. The figure of 50% can be exceeded at the discretion of the Board in
exceptional cases i.e. hardship or special ability. The maximum award in
2007/08 will be £600.
- Scholarships may be available in connection with competitions
of international standard.
- Candidates must be aged 25 or younger during the year in which
the award is sought.
- The candidate must be supported by two referees one of whom
should be a professional musician or a person of standing in the world of
music.
- Scholarships will not be available for the purchase of
instruments, equipment or sheet music.
- For an exceptional project showing imagination, innovation and
enterprise, the Board may offer a special additional award up to a maximum of
twice the original award.
- The Board will consider applications three times a year with
closing dates of 30 April, 31 August and 31 December.
