Former Hampshire County Councillors honoured

Six former Hampshire County Councillors have been recognised today with the award of the title of Honorary Alderman, for their distinguished service to the people of Hampshire

At a special meeting held today (Thursday 28 November 2024), the County Council has conferred the title of Honorary Alderman on former County Councillors Tony Barron, Charles Choudhary, Roger Huxstep, Carol Leversha, Patricia West and Seán Woodward.

Paying tribute, Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Nick Adams-King said: “The title of Honorary Alderman is made to recognise the eminent service of former County Councillors who are no longer elected Members of the Council. To be awarded Honorary Alderman status is a mark of the distinction with which these former Councillors have served the County Council, and the whole community of Hampshire.”

To commemorate their work within Hampshire, Chairman of the County Council, Councillor Keith Mans also presented a certificate to each new Honorary Alderman.

Tony Barron 
Tony Barron served as a County Councillor from 1985 to 2001 representing the Alton Division. During his service Tony held the following roles: Chairman of North East (and North West) Hampshire Area Building Panel (1987 to 1993), Chairman of the Education Committee (1993 to 1997) and Vice-Chairman of Services for the Under-Eights Joint Sub-Committee (jointly with Social Services Committee) (1993 to 1995)

Charles Choudhary 
Charles Choudhary served as a County Councillor from 2013 to 2017 representing the Aldershot West Division, and from 2017 to 2021 representing the Aldershot North Division. Charles served as Chairman of the County Council from 2019 to 2020 and as Vice Chairman from 2018 to 2019. 

Roger Huxstep 
Roger Huxstep served as a County Councillor from 2013 to 2021 representing the Meon Valley Division. During his service, Roger chaired the Health and Adult Social Care Select Committee (2015 to 2021) and was Vice-Chairman of the River Hamble Harbour Management Committee (2017 to 2021). 

Carol Leversha 
Carol Leversha served as a County Councillor from 2001 to 2009 representing the Odiham Division and from 2009 to 2013 representing the Farnborough West Division. During her service Carol held the following roles: Chairman of the Children and Young People Select Committee (known as Children's Services Policy Review Committee until 2006) from 2005 to 2009, Vice Chairman of Policy and Resources Select Committee (2007 to 2009), Chairman of Policy and Resources Select Committee (2011 to 2013). She also served as Chairman of the County Council from 2012 to 2011 following a year as Vice Chairman. 

Patricia West 
Patricia West served as a County Councillor from 1999 to 2005 representing the Andover North Division and from 2005 to 2013 representing the Andover West Division. During her service, Patricia held the following roles: Vice-Chairman of Youth Panel (2002 to 2004), Vice-Chairman Children's Services Policy Review Committee (2004 to 2007), Chairman/Vice Chairman of Health and Adult Social Care Committee (2007 to 2014), Vice-Chairman of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Authority Performance Review Committee (2009 to 2010), Chairman of Children and Young People Select Committee (2009 to 2010). She also served as Chairman of the County Council from 2006 to 2007 following a year as Vice Chairman. 

Seán Woodward 
Seán Woodward served as a County Councillor from 2005 to 2024 representing the Fareham Sarisbury Division. During his service, Seán held the following roles: Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment (2013 to 2016), Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage (2018 to 2020), Chairman of River Hamble Harbour Management Committee (2017 to 2021) and Chairman of River Hamble Harbour Board (2021 to 2024).
